Risk Assessments

These evaluations are brief assessments generally used to address a specific risk situation and/or to make treatment recommendations based on level of necessary supervision. The testing includes the MCMI-III (a personality inventory), an Abel Assessment of Sexual Interest (to assess client sexual interests), and a Plethysmograph (PPG to assess sexual arousal patterns).  In addition to the testing, there is generally an average of 2 - 5 hours of clinical interview, review of records, review of testing results and interpretation of such and the final report writing.

Complete Forensic Psychosexual Evaluations

This assessment includes all aspects of a Risk Assessment as well as additional testing and interviews, as determined by the evaluator, geared to the special needs of each client.  Such additional testing may include a full range of adult or juvenile actuarial inventories and other objective and projective psychological tests to address specific diagnostic problem areas (e.g. substance abuse, anger, trauma, anti-social personality and neurological deficits).  A more extensive review of legal and medical records is also included in this type of evaluation.

Treatment Services

New England Forensic Associates' comprehensive treatment programs involve more than just attending weekly psycho-educational groups, because these problems generally go much deeper. Stable change requires a difficult confrontation of one's old rationalizations, and of the denial of the hurtful. inappropriate, and damaging thoughts and behavior. This requires a structured, yet safe, nonjudgmental environment.

Starting with a comprehensive intake evaluation, each person's treatment is tailored to fit their own individual needs. During this phase, the person's spouse or partner is also interviewed. Important history is taken, family needs are assessed, and the partner is informed about an ongoing "partner's support" group. Highly specialized diagnostic tests can help to identify the strength of deviant arousal such as exhibitionism, pedophilia, and other paraphilias. Control can be improved with specialized treatment, including individual behavior therapy, and medication.

Professional Sexual Misconduct

NEFA is affiliated with Dr. Gene Abel's National Network For The Treatment Of Professional Sexual Misconduct . The National Network specializes in evaluation, treatment, and monitoring such persons, to protect parishioners, patients and clients, and where appropriate and safe, to assist such professionals to return to practice under strict supervision and monitoring.

Treatment for Sexual Compulsives

NEFA has developed a specific treatment program for previously hard-to-treat behaviors such as exhibitionism, and those persons who are "addicted" to phone sex, internet pornography, or child pornography, and other sexual addictions. Treating these sexual problems in a group, or just by medications alone, are not usually effective in preventing relapse, and a more multi-modal approach must be used.

Program for Child Sexual Abusers

This program focuses on structure and close monitoring to bring abusive urges under immediate control using behavior therapy and learning of relapse prevention strategies and developing greater victim empathy, before addressing the development of stable, appropriate and nonexploitative, adult functioning.
