Martin P. Kafka, MD, maintains a private psychiatry practice within the New England Forensic Associates suite in Arlington.
Dr. Kafka received his medical degree, (cum laude) from Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York in 1973 and completed his adult psychiatric residency at the University of Michigan Hospitals (1977). Dr. Kafka has over 35 years of general psychiatric practice and 20 years of specialized experience evaluating, researching and treating sexual impulsivity disorders.
He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, a Senior Clinical Associate at McLean Hospital, Belmont MA and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He is a member of the Sexual and Gender Disorders Working Group (Paraphilias Sub-Committee) of the American Psychiatric Association for the formulation of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, 5th Edition due for publication in 2013.
His clinical and research interests include the developmental antecedents and clinical manifestations of hypersexuality, the paraphilias, and paraphilia-related disorders (a.k.a. sexual addiction/sexual compulsivity), as well as the pharmacologic treatment of these conditions. Dr. Kafka has published over 35 peer-reviewed original research and review articles and book chapters on issues related to sexual impulsivity disorders and co-associated psychiatric diagnoses.
